Weapons

Goddess Durga is one of the most powerful deities of the Hindus. She is the goddess of power and strength having many names, personas and facets. She protects her devotees from evil powers and safeguards them. Goddess Durga has ten arms each holding one of the divine weapons received as gifts and boons from the other gods to fight Mahisasur the demon.

These weapons actually represent the characters of human behaviour which every person should possess. Any evil coming can be invaded if we are ruled by these characters which are signified by the weapons of Goddess Durga.

  • Lord Shiva gave his Trident to Goddess Durga. The Trishul or the trident has three sharp edges meaning that humans are composed of three qualities namely Tamas (inactivity and lethargic tendency), Rajas (hyperactivity and desires) and Sattva (positivity and purity).

  • Sudarshan Chakra was given by Lord Vishnu.  It symbolises that Durga is the centre of creation and all the universe revolves around her.​

  • Vajra or Thunderbolt was given by Lord Indra. This weapon symbolizes firmness of spirit. Praying to Mother Durga will help shatter the problems encountered in life without losing confidence. The divinity empowers her devotee with unshaken confidence and will.

  • ​Bow and arrow was given by Lord Vayu. He gave her a bow and a quiver full of arrows. The bow and arrow are the symbols of energy while the bow represents potential energy, the arrow represents the kinetic energy​

  • Bharji or Spear was gifted by Lord Agni. While a spear symbolizes auspiciousness, this gift of Agni also represents pure, fiery power. It also represents that we should possess the quality of knowing what is wrong and what is right and act accordingly.

  • ​Club or Axe or (Khitaka/Parashu) was given by Lord Vishwakarma. It signifies no fear of consequences when fighting the evil.

Counch

  • The lotus is the symbol of Brahma, and represents wisdom, as well as liberation through knowledge. Durga's compassion will help men rise up from their worldly bondage and evil to attain Moksha or liberation.

  • ​The conch is the symbol of the primordial sound called 'AUM' from which the entire creation emerged. So, it has the power to destroy all the negative energies.

  • The mace was given by Lord Kuber, the Lord of Wealth. Mace Enjoins humans to exhibit loyalty, love and devotion to Mother Durga.

​

  • The sword given to Durga by Yama, symbolizes knowledge, which has the sharpness of a sword. Knowledge is free from all doubts is symbolized by the shine of the sword.

Lion

  • Lion is the king of all animals and is, in fact, the most powerful. Goddess Durga rules the existence by making a lion her Vahana which was given to her by Lord Himalaya.

​

  • Finally, with the help of the powerful weapons goddess Durga the asura, who had taken the form of a huge buffalo. She beheaded him with the chakra which Vishnu had given her. Thus, she freed the world from Mahishasur’s tyranny. Since then, goddess Durga is worshipped during the Navratri and is addressed as Mahisasura Mardini.

UNITY IS STRENGTH - Even goddess Durga worked in unison with other gods and goddesses to become powerful enough to kill the demon once she received the weapons from them. Strength lies in unity and if we are united, we can overcome any obstacle and accomplish any goal.
